HOTEL WV    SIZEMORE

IT WAS LATE IN THE NIGHT, A BIG NEON SIGN SAID VACANCY AND FREE TV

I PULLED UP OUTSIDE GRABBED MY BAG AND I STARTED WALKING TOWARDS THE BIG GLASS DOOR

I FORGOT MY PICTURE OF YOU THAT I CARRY, IN THE DASHBOARD BESIDE THE RADIO

I GUESS IT’S NO BIG DEAL WHEN I GET BEHIND THE WHEEL AND GO

THE NIGHT CLERK LOOKED UP FROM HIS COFFEE CUP AND EYED ME WARILY

HOW MUCH FOR THE NIGHT? I DROPPED MY BAG AND TRIED TO SMILE THOUGH HE JUST STARED AT ME

I TOOK MY 20 DOLLARS FROM MY WALLET, HE SAID ROOM 13 AND HANDED ME THE KEY

AS I CLIMBED UP THE STAIRS THE COOL NIGHT AIR SMELLED OLD

I’VE BEEN DRIVING ROUND THESE BACKROADS TO PLAY A SONG WHEREVER I GO

THE PEOPLE I MEET ARE MOSTLY SWEET BUT I CAN’T WAIT ‘TIL I GET HOME

I WOKE UP AT NOON, IT FELT MUCH TOO SOON BUT I STOOD AND STRETCHED MY ARMS TO THE SKY

I FRESHENED UP, GRABBED MY BAG AND STARTED WALKING TOWARDS THE BIG GLASS DOOR

I FLIPPED THE KEY TO THE GIRL BEHIND THE COUNTER, THE SUN WAS BURNING OFF THE MORNING FOG

NO MONEY FOR A MEAL BUT I LOVE IT STILL ON THE ROAD

I GUESS IT’S NO BIG DEAL WHEN I GET BEHIND THE WHEEL AND GO

FOG ON THE RING    SIZEMORE

IT’S BEEN 40 DAYS SINCE I LEFT THE VALLEY

40 DAYS OF WORK BUSTIN’ MY SIDE

ON A SUMMER DAY WHEN THE SUN IS RIDING HIGH

THE VALLEY ROLLS ON FOR MILES

I CAN’T SEE MY HOME OR THE ONE THAT’S WAITING

BROTHER WHEN THERE’S FOG ON THE RING

EACH JUNE     Sizemore

I remember my Mother singing, soft and low

A forgotten lullaby, so I could sleep in the bitter cold

Of December, when the wind would moan

Some days I’m as old as this mountain,

Or young as the dawn

And summer comes on slowly

But it never stays as long……

My Billy is buried on a hillside; he died mining on the Knob

My Annie’s in Carolina, she went for a government job

I just live on this mountain, getting older, tired and lost

I still plant a garden in springtime,

Cook apples in the fall

And wintertime is coming

But it never stays as long…..

I get this feeling each June, when I realize another summer without you…

Today I’m as old as this mountain,

I awoke with the dawn

And this feeling comes on slowly

But it never stays as long……..

CROSSCUT SAW     SIZEMORE

I WAS BORN IN WEST VIRGINIA, ON A HAZY AUGUST MORN

THE LAST OF 11 CHILDREN, I WASN’T A BABE FOR LONG

I WAS PUT ON THE MEADOW RIVER LINE

CUTTIN TREES ON THE COLD KNOB GRADE

JUST ME AND OLD INDIAN JOHN, AND A FIVE FOOT CROSSCUT BLADE

IN THE WINTER OF ’35, WE’D DIG A FOOT DOWN IN THE SNOW

IN THE SPRING WHEN THE SNOW DID LEAVE, THE GROUND WAS 5 FEET BELOW

OLD JOHN GOT CRIPPLED BY A CHESTNUT

LOST HIS LEG JUST PAST THE KNEE

THEY PUT A YOUNG BUCK ON THE GANG, TO PULL ON THAT OLD SAW WITH ME

I MET A MAN ONCE IN RICHMOND, WHO PLANTED ‘ROUND 10,000 TREES

I FIGURE THAT SOUNDS ‘BOUT RIGHT, TO MAKE HIM EVEN WITH ME

I’VE CUT EVERY KIND OF HARDWOOD

HARD MAPLE TO MIGHTY OAK

I’D SAY IT’LL BE SOFT PINE, TO HOLD ME WHENEVER I GO

THE COMPANY CUT ME LOOSE IN ‘68; THEY SAID I’D DONE GOT TOO OLD

WITH A PAT ON THE BACK AND A SMILE, I MOSEYED ON DOWN THE ROAD

SOMETIMES I THINK BOUT OLD JOHN

ON NIGHTS WHEN I CAN’T SLEEP

OR I THINK BOUT A CROSSCUT SAW, AND PLANTING 10,000 TREES

AND PLANTING 10,000 TREES

WINTER WIND    Hoffman

That year it snowed before it frosted, so it came as quite a shock

Knew the sunny days were numbered, didn’t know their time was up

She kissed him when they parted, and the memory of that kiss

Warmed him for days on end, till she was too far gone to miss

And the change was subtle, unseen by the naked eye

But it cut right through him, like the winter wind at night

His days were grey, his nights were long

He endlessly wondered, what the hell he’d done wrong

That year it snowed before it frosted, snow lay heavy on the ground

His friends found him barefoot, out wandering round

He said that he’d seen her through the window, dancing in the snow

Snowflakes tangled in her long dark hair, and then she was gone

And the change was subtle, unseen by the naked eye

But it cut right through him, like the winter wind at night

And it left him shaken; it chilled him to the bone

And even by the fire, he never could get warm

That year it snowed before it frosted

UNSPOKEN WORDS    SIZEMORE

DANCIN’ ROUND & ROUND BAREFEET ON A HARDWOOD FLOOR

DANCIN’ ROUND & ROUND MY HEART CAN TAKE NO MORE

I’M SITTIN AND I’M DREAMIN’ MOONSHINE MAKES ME THAT WAY

WHILE YOU’RE DANCIN’ ROUND THE THINGS YOU WANT TO SAY

MET YOU ON A WEDNESDAY JUST ME AND MY OLD GUITAR

AND I COULD TELL BY YOUR SMILE THAT I WOULDN’T GET VERY FAR

BUT I CAN’T FORGET YOUR RAVEN HAIR OR THE SMELL YOU LEFT IN THE ROOM

AND THE MESS YOU MADE OF MY HEART SO I SING A LONESOME TUNE

I SAW YOU IN THE MOONLIGHT AND THE STARS WERE TURNED TO DARK

WHEN I SAW YOU STRETCHIN’ OUT I COULD LOOK NO MORE

YOU SAY YOU’LL BE ANOTHER’S WIFE AND THAT YOU HAVE TO LEAVE

BUT THE WORDS YOU LEFT UNSPOKEN TELL ANOTHER THING TO ME

NEW TO THIS DAY    SIZEMORE

I’M NEW TO THIS DAY BUT I’M OLD NEWS TO YOU

IN MY POWDER BLUE DRESS AND PATENT LEATHER SHOES

HAIR ALL UP IN A PRETTY WHITE BOW, I’M NEW TO THIS DAY

I’M NEW TO THIS DAY BUT I’M NOT NEW TO THIS

ANOTHER LONELY DAY AND NO ONE TO KISS

ALL DRESSED UP, BUT NO PLACE TO GO, I’M NEW TO THIS DAY

YESTERDAY THERE WAS ANOTHER, TOMORROW IS THE SAME

I’LL WALK PAST YOUR DOORWAY GO TO SLEEP WITH YOUR FLAME

I’M NEW TO THIS DAY WITH MY PAWN SHOP HEART

I GOT IT SECOND HAND; MINE TORE APART

I’M WAITING HERE FOR THE BEATING TO START, I’M NEW TO THIS DAY

YESTERDAY THERE WAS ANOTHER TOMORROW IS THE SAME

I’LL WAKE IN THE MORNING WITH YOUR MEMORY TO BLAME

I’M NEW TO THIS DAY WITH ANOTHER FRESH START

BRAND NEW DRESS, SECOND HAND HEART

TELL MYSELF WHAT I ALREADY KNEW, I’M NEW TO THIS DAY

BLACK DOG WANDERIN                   Sizemore

Rode my horse in the pale moonlight, broken shadows cut the night

Black Dog wandering in my path

Like a haint runnin’ through the wood, try to get to heaven but it ain’t no good

Black Dog wandering in my path

Black Dog wanderin’, eyes dancin’ like fire

Try to run and hide but the hound don’t tire

Black Dog wanderin’, I can smell the Devil’s breath,

Try to run and hide but the hound don’t rest

7 nights and 7 days, the black dog blocked my way

Black Dog wandering in my path

On midnight of the eighth that dog took me away

Black Dog wandering in my path

I could feel the sulphur sting pass through fire ‘til my soul is clean

Black Dog wandering in my path

Now I know I’m Glory bound on the back of the Devil hound

Black Dog wandering in my path

MAGGIE’S FIELD    SIZEMORE

TAKE ME UP THAT LONG & WINDING ROAD

CARRY ME, LIGHTEN MY LOAD

TAKE ME WHERE MY SOUL WILL NEVER YIELD

LAY ME DOWN IN MAGGIE’S FIELD

WELL THE PINES THROW DIRTY SHADOWS

THAT MARK THE CLEAN WHITE SNOW

THAT OLD PATH IS FULL OF BRAMBLES

THEY SCRATCH YOUR HANDS AND TEAR YOUR CLOTHES

BUT THAT OLD PATH IS WHERE I’M HEADING

WHEN MY SHORTEST DAYS ARE DONE

NO OTHER ROADS WILL I TRAVEL

WHEN MY CARRIAGE AND DRIVER COME

CONSTANT PAIN WILL HAVE SUBSIDED

AND MY TEARS WILL FALL NO MORE

THAT OLD WAR THAT WE BEEN FIGHTING

WE’LL CALL A TRUCE ON GOLDEN SHORES

COME CLEAR A PATH THROUGH THE BRAMBLES

FEEL THE BITE OF THORNS NO MORE

THE GLORY ROAD IS LIGHTLY TRAVELED

THOUGH IT IS WIDE, THOUGH IT IS SURE

WHERE YOU GOIN?   SIZEMORE

I WAS WALKING THROUGH THE LEAVES

I WAS WALKING THROUGH THE LEAVES

HEARD SOME TALKING IN THE OLD OAK TRESS

I WAS WALKING THROUGH THE LEAVES

HEARD A VOICE IN MY LEFT EAR

HEARD A VOICE IN MY LEFT EAR

IT WAS ASKING ME SOFT LOW AND CLEAR

HEARD A VOICE IN MY LEFT EAR

WHERE YOU GOIN? TO SEE MY FATHER

WHERE YOU GOIN? I'M GOING HOME

WHAT YOU SEE? WHERE I COME FROM

I'M GOIN HOME

WHEN I GOT TO THE BEND

WHEN I GOT TO THE BEND

THAT OLD GRAVE HAD FALLEN IN

WHEN I GOT TO THE BEND

MY FATHER STOOD ON SOLID GROUND

MY FATHER STOOD ON SOLID GROUND

HE WAS SHOUTING PRAISE HALLELUJAH ALL AROUND

FATHER WHERE YOU GOIN NOW?

CHORUS
